It is indicated for the dissolution of cholesterol gallstones in patients with a functioning gallbladder and for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a chronic autoimmune liver disease characterized by progressive destruction of intrahepatic bile ducts. Ursodeoxycholic Acid exerts its therapeutic effect by reducing the cholesterol content of bile, thereby decreasing cholesterol saturation and promoting the gradual dissolution of cholesterol-rich gallstones.
