Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI) that also inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing the virus from multiplying and helping to improve immune function. Forstavir-EM is prescribed as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) to manage HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents weighing at least 35 kg. It helps to decrease viral load, increase CD4 cell counts, and delay the progression of HIV-related disease.
This medication is not a cure for HIV but helps control the infection and reduce the risk of transmission. Patients should take Forstavir-EM exactly as prescribed, and regular monitoring of kidney function and viral load is recommended.
