Gatifloxacin (0.5% w/v)
Active composition
Gatifloxacin inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing bacterial DNA replication and transcription, leading to bacterial cell death.
Medical applications
Zymaxid Ophthalmic Solution contains Gatifloxacin 0.5% w/v, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms. Gatifloxacin exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death. Zymaxid is formulated for topical ocular administration and is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens commonly implicated in ocular infections. The solution is typically administered as one drop in the affected eye(s) every two hours while awake for the first two days, followed by one drop four times daily for the next five days, or as prescribed by a healthcare professional. It is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to gatifloxacin or other quinolones. Caution is advised in patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions to fluoroquinolones. Adverse effects are generally mild and may include transient ocular discomfort, burning, or stinging upon instillation. Zymaxid Ophthalmic Solution should be used with caution in patients with corneal epithelial defects or severe ocular surface disease. Proper hygiene and adherence to dosing schedules are essential to prevent resistance development and ensure therapeutic efficacy.
