Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea class drug, functions by stimulating pancreatic beta cells to increase insulin secretion, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily acts by decreasing hepatic glucose production and improving peripheral insulin sensitivity, enhancing glucose uptake by muscle tissues. The synergistic effect of these two agents provides effective glycemic control in patients inadequately managed by diet, exercise, and monotherapy.
