The drug acts by increasing cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels in platelets and vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to inhibition of platelet activation and relaxation of vascular smooth muscle. Zilast 100 is typically administered orally, with the recommended dose being 100 mg twice daily, taken at least 30 minutes before or two hours after meals to enhance absorption.
It is contraindicated in patients with heart failure due to the risk of increased mortality in this population. Common adverse effects include headache, diarrhea, palpitations, and dizziness. Caution is advised in patients with bleeding disorders or those on concurrent anticoagulant therapy.
