Xmet 250 Tablet contains Metformin 250 mg, an oral antihyperglycemic agent primarily used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin belongs to the biguanide class and functions by improving glucose tolerance through multiple mechanisms, including the reduction of hepatic glucose production, decrease in intestinal absorption of glucose, and enhancement of peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. Xmet 250 is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes, particularly in overweight patients where diet and exercise alone have proven insufficient. It is also used in combination with other antidiabetic agents or insulin when monotherapy does not achieve adequate glycemic control. The medication is generally well tolerated; however, common adverse effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and a metallic taste. Rarely, lactic acidosis, a serious metabolic complication, may occur, especially in patients with renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, or conditions predisposing to hypoxia. Therefore, renal function should be assessed prior to initiation and periodically thereafter. Xmet 250 should be used with caution in patients with contraindications including severe renal impairment and acute metabolic acidosis.
