Sitagliptin inhibits DPP-4, increasing incretin levels, which stimulate insulin release and reduce glucagon secretion.
Metformin reduces hepatic glucose production and enhances peripheral insulin sensitivity, lowering blood glucose levels.
Medical applications
Xigtin 50mg/1000mg Tablet is a combination oral antidiabetic medication containing Sitagliptin 50mg and Metformin 1000mg, indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, enhances the incretin system, thereby increasing insulin release and decreasing glucagon levels in a glucose-dependent manner. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily acts by reducing hepatic glucose production, improving insulin sensitivity, and enhancing peripheral glucose uptake. The synergistic effect of these agents helps achieve better glycemic control in patients inadequately controlled on diet and exercise alone or on monotherapy. Xigtin is typically prescribed as part of a comprehensive diabetes management plan, including diet, exercise, and regular blood glucose monitoring. It is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, metabolic acidosis, or hypersensitivity to its components. Common adverse effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort, which often diminish with continued use. Regular monitoring of renal function and blood glucose levels is recommended during therapy. Xigtin should be used cautiously in patients with risk factors for lactic acidosis and is not indicated for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
