Dapagliflozin (5mg) + Metformin (1000mg)
Active composition
+1 more active ingredient
Metformin reduces hepatic glucose production and enhances peripheral insulin sensitivity, lowering blood glucose levels.
Medical applications
Xigduo 5mg/1000mg Tablet IR is a combination oral antidiabetic medication containing dapagliflozin 5mg and metformin 1000mg, indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Dapagliflozin, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, reduces renal glucose reabsorption, promoting glycosuria and thereby lowering plasma glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily decreases hepatic glucose production and improves peripheral insulin sensitivity, enhancing glucose uptake and utilization. The immediate-release formulation facilitates rapid onset of action. Xigduo is prescribed as adjunctive therapy to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults inadequately controlled on metformin alone or in combination with other antidiabetic agents. It may also be considered for monotherapy in patients intolerant to metformin. The combination offers complementary mechanisms to achieve better glycemic control with potential benefits including weight reduction and low risk of hypoglycemia. Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort, as well as increased risk of urinary tract infections and genital mycotic infections due to glucosuria. Caution is advised in patients with renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, or predisposition to ketoacidosis. Regular monitoring of renal function and glycemic parameters is recommended during therapy.
