Rifaximin (400mg)
Active composition
Rifaximin binds to the beta-subunit of bacterial RNA polymerase, inhibiting RNA synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death.
Medical applications
Xifatre 400 Tablet contains Rifaximin 400 mg, a broad-spectrum, non-absorbable antibiotic primarily used to treat gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Rifaximin exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis through binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby preventing transcription and bacterial replication. Due to its minimal systemic absorption, Xifatre 400 is particularly effective in targeting infections localized within the gastrointestinal tract, including traveler's diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli, hepatic encephalopathy for the reduction of risk of overt encephalopathy recurrence, and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). The drug's localized action minimizes systemic side effects and reduces the risk of systemic antibiotic resistance. Xifatre 400 is generally well tolerated, with common adverse effects including mild gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, abdominal pain, and flatulence. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to rifaximin or any rifamycin derivatives. Caution is advised in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Dosage and duration of therapy should be tailored according to the indication and patient response, and it is essential to complete the prescribed course to prevent the development of resistant bacterial strains. Xifatre 400 should be used under medical supervision with appropriate diagnostic evaluation.
