It is primarily indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation or prosthetic heart valves. Warfarin exerts its effect by interfering with the synthesis of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors in the liver, thereby prolonging the prothrombin time and reducing blood coagulability.
