Metrogyl 400 Tablet contains Metronidazole 400 mg, a nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent effective against a broad spectrum of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria, including intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and respiratory tract infections.

Additionally, Metrogyl 400 is used in the management of protozoal infections such as amoebiasis, giardiasis, and trichomoniasis. The mechanism of action involves the disruption of DNA synthesis in anaerobic organisms, leading to cell death. Metrogyl 400 is administered orally, with dosage and duration tailored to the specific infection and patient condition. It is generally well tolerated, but potential adverse effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, metallic taste, and occasional headache or dizziness.
Caution is advised in patients with hepatic impairment or neurological disorders. Metrogyl 400 should not be consumed with alcohol due to the risk of disulfiram-like reactions. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives. Metrogyl 400 Tablet is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.
High Risk
Pregnancy
Metrogyl 400 Tablet should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment of the mother is completed and the drug is eliminated from her body. If a single dose of Metrogyl 400 Tablet is used, it is recommended to hold breastfeeding for 12-24 hours to allow the removal of the drug.

Metrogyl 400 Tablet is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Metrogyl 400 Tablet is recommended. Patients undergoing kidney dialysis should take this medicine after the dialysis treatment.
