Clavulanic Acid (125mg) + Amoxycillin (250mg)
Active composition
+1 more active ingredient
Amoxycillin inhibits the synthesis of peptidoglycan in bacterial cell walls, leading to cell lysis and death.
Medical applications
Megamentin 250 mg/125 mg Tablet is a combination antibiotic formulation containing Amoxycillin 250 mg and Clavulanic Acid 125 mg. Amoxycillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic, exerts bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, while Clavulanic Acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, protects Amoxycillin from enzymatic degradation by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria, thereby extending its spectrum of activity. This synergistic combination is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, including strains resistant to Amoxycillin alone. Megamentin is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections (including sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and otitis media. The dosage and duration of therapy should be tailored based on the severity of infection, patient age, renal function, and clinical response. Caution is advised in patients with a history of penicillin allergy or hypersensitivity to beta-lactam antibiotics. Common adverse effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Megamentin should be used under medical supervision to ensure appropriate use and to minimize the risk of resistance development. It is contraindicated in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with Amoxycillin/Clavulanic Acid therapy.
