Humalog is indicated for the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus and can be administered subcutaneously shortly before or immediately after meals to mimic physiological insulin release. It may also be used in insulin pumps for continuous subcutaneous infusion. The rapid absorption profile allows for greater flexibility in meal timing and improved management of blood glucose excursions.
Dosage and administration should be individualized based on patient needs, blood glucose monitoring, and metabolic requirements. Caution is advised to avoid hypoglycemia, the most common adverse effect, which may occur if insulin dose, food intake, or physical activity is not properly balanced.
