Ornidazole (500mg)
Active composition
Ornidazole disrupts DNA synthesis in protozoan organisms, leading to cell death and resolution of infection.
Medical applications
Horn Tablet contains Ornidazole 500 mg, an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent primarily used in the treatment of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Ornidazole is effective against a broad spectrum of anaerobic organisms including Bacteroides species, Clostridium species, and protozoal pathogens such as Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, and Trichomonas vaginalis. The mechanism of action involves the disruption of DNA synthesis in susceptible organisms, leading to cell death. Horn Tablet is indicated for the management of gastrointestinal infections, amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, and anaerobic bacterial infections including pelvic inflammatory disease, bacterial vaginosis, and postoperative infections. It is administered orally, with dosage and duration tailored according to the specific infection and patient factors. Common adverse effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, metallic taste, and rarely, neurological symptoms like dizziness or peripheral neuropathy. Caution is advised in patients with hepatic impairment or a history of hypersensitivity to nitroimidazole derivatives. Horn Tablet should be used under medical supervision, and patients are advised to complete the prescribed course to prevent resistance and recurrence. Concomitant alcohol intake should be avoided due to the risk of disulfiram-like reactions.
