Metformin (1000mg)
Active composition
Metformin reduces hepatic glucose production and enhances peripheral insulin sensitivity, lowering blood glucose levels.
Medical applications
HMET-Forte Tablet SR contains Metformin 1000 mg as the active ingredient and is formulated as a sustained-release (SR) tablet to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin is a biguanide antihyperglycemic agent that primarily acts by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. HMET-Forte Tablet SR is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes, particularly in overweight patients or those with insulin resistance. The sustained-release formulation allows for once-daily dosing, enhancing patient compliance by minimizing gastrointestinal side effects commonly associated with immediate-release metformin. Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and a metallic taste, which often diminish with continued use. Rare but serious adverse effects include lactic acidosis, especially in patients with renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, or conditions predisposing to hypoxia. HMET-Forte Tablet SR should be used with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment, and renal function should be monitored regularly. It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to metformin, acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, and should be temporarily discontinued during radiologic studies involving iodinated contrast media.
Biguanides Derivative
Important precautions
Based on clinical trials and patient reports.
Overall Tolerance
Common Side Effects
HMET-Forte Tablet SR is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.
High Risk
HMET-Forte Tablet SR should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment of the mother is completed and the drug is eliminated from her body.
Medical Advice
HMET-Forte Tablet SR should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of HMET-Forte Tablet SR may be needed. Please consult your doctor. Use of HMET-Forte Tablet SR is, however, not recommended in patients with severe kidney disease.
Exercise Caution
Your ability to drive may be affected if your blood sugar is too low or too high. Do not drive if these symptoms occur.
Consult Doctor
HMET-Forte Tablet SR is probably safe to use in patients with liver disease. Limited data available suggests that dose adjustment of HMET-Forte Tablet SR may not be needed in these patients. Please consult your doctor.
