Hmet 500mg Tablet contains Metformin hydrochloride, a biguanide class oral antihyperglycemic agent used primarily in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It functions by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. Hmet 500mg is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes, particularly in overweight patients where diet and exercise alone have not achieved adequate control. The medication is also used in combination with other antidiabetic agents when monotherapy is insufficient. Metformin is not indicated for the treatment of type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and a metallic taste, which often subside with continued use. Rare but serious adverse effects include lactic acidosis, particularly in patients with renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, or conditions predisposing to hypoxia. Therefore, renal function should be assessed prior to initiation and periodically thereafter. Hmet 500mg should be taken with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.
