Nitroglycerin is a potent vasodilator that acts primarily on the venous system, reducing myocardial oxygen demand by decreasing preload and, to a lesser extent, afterload. This leads to improved coronary blood flow and alleviation of ischemic chest pain.

GTN Spray is administered sublingually, allowing for rapid absorption and onset of action within 1 to 3 minutes, making it suitable for acute angina attacks. The spray delivers a metered dose, ensuring consistent and accurate dosing. It is recommended to use one spray under the tongue at the onset of angina symptoms; if pain persists after 5 minutes, a second dose may be administered, with a maximum of three doses within 15 minutes.
Patients experiencing no relief after the third dose should seek immediate medical attention. GTN Spray should be used with caution in patients with hypotension, severe anemia, or increased intracranial pressure. Common adverse effects include headache, dizziness, and flushing. It is contraindicated in patients using phosphodiesterase inhibitors due to the risk of severe hypotension.
Proper storage and adherence to prescribed dosing are essential for optimal therapeutic outcomes.
