How It Works
Empagliflozin inhibits the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) in the renal proximal tubules, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion.

Empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, reduces renal glucose reabsorption, thereby promoting urinary glucose excretion and lowering plasma glucose levels. This dual mechanism addresses hyperglycemia through complementary pathways, improving glycemic control in patients inadequately controlled by diet and exercise alone or in combination with other antidiabetic agents. Glyxambi is typically administered once daily, with or without food. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing HbA1c levels, with additional benefits including weight reduction and a low risk of hypoglycemia when used appropriately.
Caution is advised in patients with renal impairment, and it is contraindicated in those with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Common adverse effects include urinary tract infections, genital mycotic infections, and nasopharyngitis. Regular monitoring of renal function and glycemic parameters is recommended during therapy to optimize treatment outcomes.
