Gluformin XL 500 Tablet contains Metformin 500 mg as its active ingredient and is primarily indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin belongs to the biguanide class of oral antihyperglycemic agents and functions by improving glucose tolerance. It decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and enhances insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.

Gluformin XL 500 is formulated as an extended-release tablet to provide a sustained therapeutic effect, allowing for once-daily dosing, which may improve patient compliance. This medication is recommended as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes, particularly in overweight or obese patients. It may be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic agents, including insulin.
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort, which often subside with continued use. Gluformin XL 500 should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, or conditions predisposing to hypoxia. Regular monitoring of renal function and glycemic parameters is advised during therapy. This medication is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, acute metabolic acidosis, or hypersensitivity to metformin.
