Glucobay M50 Tablet is a combination oral antidiabetic medication containing Acarbose 50 mg and Metformin 500 mg, indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Acarbose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, delays the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates in the small intestine, thereby reducing postprandial hyperglycemia. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily decreases hepatic glucose production, enhances peripheral glucose uptake, and improves insulin sensitivity, contributing to overall glycemic control.

The synergistic action of these two agents helps in lowering both fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels effectively. Glucobay M50 is recommended as an adjunct to diet and exercise when monotherapy with either agent is insufficient to achieve target glycemic levels. It is particularly useful in patients with insulin resistance and those at risk of cardiovascular complications associated with diabetes.
Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as flatulence, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort, which often subside with continued therapy. Caution is advised in patients with renal or hepatic impairment, and regular monitoring of blood glucose and renal function is essential. Glucobay M50 should be used under medical supervision, with appropriate dose adjustments based on therapeutic response and tolerability.

Glucobay M50 Tablet is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Glucobay M50 Tablet is recommended. Use of Glucobay M50 Tablet is, however, not recommended in patients with severe kidney disease. Regular monitoring of kidney function is advisable while you are taking this medicine.
