Glucobay 50 Tablet contains Acarbose 50 mg, an oral antidiabetic agent used primarily in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Acarbose functions as an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, delaying the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates in the small intestine, thereby reducing postprandial hyperglycemia. It is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes, particularly when diet alone or combined with other oral hypoglycemic agents is insufficient.

The recommended dosage should be individualized based on patient response and tolerance, typically starting with a low dose to minimize gastrointestinal side effects such as flatulence, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Glucobay 50 Tablet is contraindicated in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic intestinal diseases associated with marked disorders of digestion or absorption, and cirrhosis.
Caution is advised in patients with renal impairment. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential to assess therapeutic efficacy and adjust dosage accordingly. Glucobay should be taken at the start of each main meal to optimize its efficacy. It is not recommended for use in type 1 diabetes or diabetic coma. Patient education regarding adherence to diet, exercise, and monitoring is critical for optimal outcomes.
