Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, stimulates pancreatic beta-cell insulin secretion, thereby reducing blood glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily decreases hepatic glucose production and improves peripheral insulin sensitivity, contributing to enhanced glycemic control. Pioglitazone, a thiazolidinedione, acts as an insulin sensitizer by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ), which improves glucose uptake in adipose tissue and muscle. The sustained-release formulation ensures a gradual release of active ingredients, promoting better patient compliance and minimizing gastrointestinal side effects commonly associated with metformin.
