Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea class drug, stimulates pancreatic beta cells to increase insulin secretion, thereby reducing blood glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, primarily decreases hepatic glucose production and improves peripheral insulin sensitivity, enhancing glucose uptake by muscle tissues. The synergistic action of these agents provides effective glycemic control in patients inadequately managed by diet, exercise, and monotherapy.
