What it treats
SITARAY M 50/500MG TAB is an advanced, dual-action oral anti-diabetic combination medication containing Sitagliptin (50 mg) and Metformin (500 mg). It is primarily prescribed for the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus when diet, exercise, and single-drug therapy are insufficient to control blood sugar levels. Sitagliptin belongs to the DPP-4 inhibitor class; it works by increasing the levels of incretin hormones, which stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin and signal the liver to stop producing excess sugar. Metformin, a biguanide, works by lowering glucose production in the liver, delaying glucose absorption from the intestines, and increasing the body's sensitivity to its own insulin. Together, they provide highly effective, complementary glycemic control and help prevent long-term diabetic complications affecting the kidneys, eyes, and nerves.
How it's taken
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break it.
This medicine must be taken with or immediately after meals (usually twice daily, or as prescribed). Taking it with food significantly reduces the risk of common gastrointestinal side effects like stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea caused by Metformin.
Take it consistently at the same times every day. Never stop taking this medication abruptly without consulting your doctor, even if your blood sugar readings normalize. Missed one? Take it when you remember unless the next dose is near — never double up.
Kidney & liver
Kidney — caution: Metformin is cleared exclusively by the kidneys. If you have severe kidney impairment (low eGFR levels), this drug is contraindicated due to the high risk of lactic acidosis. Regular kidney function tests (eGFR/Serum Creatinine) are mandatory. Liver — caution: It should be used with extreme caution or avoided in patients with severe, active liver disease, as hepatic impairment compromises the body's ability to clear lactate, further increasing the risk of lactic acidosis.
