Vasopressin (argipressin) is a vasopressor and antidiuretic hormone given by injection. It is used to raise blood pressure in vasodilatory shock (such as septic shock), to manage central (cranial) diabetes insipidus, and as an adjunct in controlling gastrointestinal/variceal bleeding and during advanced cardiac life support.
Vasopressin stimulates V1 receptors on vascular smooth muscle to produce vasoconstriction and raise systemic blood pressure, and acts on renal V2 receptors to increase water reabsorption from the collecting ducts, reducing urine output.
