Sargramostim is a colony-stimulating factor used to treat neutropenia, a condition characterized by a deficiency of white blood cells, often resulting from cancer treatment or bone marrow disorders. By stimulating the bone marrow, Sargramostim enhances the production of white blood cells, thereby reducing the risk of infections in patients undergoing chemotherapy. Common side effects may include injection site reactions and bone pain, but these usually resolve over time. In simple terms, Sargramostim helps boost white blood cell counts and supports immune function in patients with low blood cell counts.
How it works
Sargramostim binds to the granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor receptor on hematopoietic progenitor cells, stimulating proliferation and differentiation into granulocytes and macrophages.
