It is important to monitor patients for potential adverse effects such as dizziness, somnolence, headache, and gastrointestinal disturbances.

Rare but serious side effects include metabolic acidosis, hypersensitivity reactions, and nephrolithiasis; therefore, periodic laboratory evaluations including renal function and serum bicarbonate levels are recommended during treatment. Zonegran should be used cautiously in patients with sulfonamide allergy and renal impairment. Dose adjustments may be necessary based on therapeutic response and tolerability.

As with all antiepileptic drugs, abrupt discontinuation should be avoided to prevent seizure exacerbation.
