Active composition
Zolmitriptan agonizes serotonin receptors, leading to vasoconstriction and alleviating migraine symptoms.
Medical applications
Zolmist Nasal Spray contains zolmitriptan 5 mg, a selective serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist indicated for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. Zolmitriptan acts by stimulating serotonin receptors in cranial blood vessels, resulting in vasoconstriction and inhibition of pro-inflammatory neuropeptide release, thereby alleviating migraine symptoms such as headache, nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia.
The nasal spray formulation offers rapid absorption through the nasal mucosa, providing prompt relief, particularly beneficial for patients experiencing nausea or vomiting that may limit oral medication intake. Zolmist is administered as a single spray dose into one nostril, with a maximum recommended dose of 10 mg within 24 hours. It is contraindicated in patients with a history of ischemic heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, cerebrovascular syndromes, or hypersensitivity to zolmitriptan or any component of the formulation.
Caution is advised when used concomitantly with other serotonergic agents due to the risk of serotonin syndrome. Common adverse effects include nasal discomfort, taste disturbances, dizziness, and fatigue. Patients should be advised to seek medical attention if they experience chest pain, severe abdominal pain, or neurological symptoms. Zolmist Nasal Spray provides an effective and convenient option for rapid migraine relief in appropriate patients.
