This intravenous formulation delivers 5mg of zoledronic acid in 100ml solution, designed to inhibit osteoclastic bone resorption, thereby improving bone mineral density and reducing skeletal-related events. Zolfrac is primarily used in the management of hypercalcemia of malignancy, Paget’s disease of bone, and to prevent skeletal complications in patients with bone metastases from solid tumors such as breast cancer and prostate cancer.

The drug acts by binding to hydroxyapatite in bone, inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, and inducing osteoclast apoptosis. Administration should be performed by healthcare professionals via intravenous infusion over no less than 15 minutes to minimize adverse reactions. Prior to infusion, adequate hydration is recommended to reduce the risk of renal toxicity. Common adverse effects include flu-like symptoms, hypocalcemia, and transient renal impairment; therefore, renal function and serum calcium levels should be monitored before and during treatment.
Zolfrac is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment and hypocalcemia. Proper patient selection and monitoring are essential to optimize therapeutic outcomes and minimize risks associated with zoledronic acid therapy.
