Miconazole (2% w/w)
Active composition
Miconazole inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, compromising fungal cell membrane integrity and leading to cell death.
Medical applications
Zole Skin Ointment contains Miconazole 2% w/w, an imidazole antifungal agent effective against a broad spectrum of fungal pathogens including dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds. It is indicated for the topical treatment of superficial fungal infections such as athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), ringworm (tinea corporis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and cutaneous candidiasis. Miconazole exerts its antifungal activity by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, thereby disrupting membrane integrity and leading to cell death. Zole Skin Ointment is applied directly to the affected area, typically twice daily, and treatment duration varies depending on the infection type and severity but usually ranges from 2 to 4 weeks. The ointment base facilitates good skin penetration and prolonged contact with the lesion. It is generally well tolerated; however, mild local irritation, burning, or itching may occur in some patients. Use should be avoided in individuals with known hypersensitivity to miconazole or any excipients in the formulation. Zole Skin Ointment is for external use only and should not be applied to mucous membranes or open wounds. Consult a healthcare professional if symptoms persist or worsen after the recommended treatment period.
