Itraconazole (200mg)
Active composition
Itraconazole inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, disrupting fungal cell membrane integrity.
Medical applications
Zole-IT 200 Capsule contains Itraconazole 200 mg, a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal agent indicated for the treatment of various systemic and superficial fungal infections. Itraconazole exerts its antifungal effect by inhibiting the cytochrome P450-dependent enzyme lanosterol 14-α-demethylase, which is essential for the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes. This disruption leads to increased membrane permeability and ultimately fungal cell death. Zole-IT 200 is commonly prescribed for conditions such as aspergillosis, histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, onychomycosis, and candidiasis, including oropharyngeal and esophageal forms. It is also effective against dermatophytic infections and certain dimorphic fungi. The capsule formulation allows for oral administration with good bioavailability, especially when taken with food to enhance absorption. Dosage and duration of therapy depend on the type and severity of infection, with treatment courses ranging from several weeks to months. Caution is advised in patients with hepatic impairment or congestive heart failure, and potential drug interactions should be carefully reviewed due to itraconazole’s inhibition of cytochrome P450 enzymes. Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, and elevated liver enzymes. Regular monitoring of liver function tests is recommended during prolonged therapy.
