Additionally, it is effective in the acute treatment and prophylaxis of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder and in reducing the frequency of migraine headaches. The extended-release formulation allows for once-daily dosing, improving patient compliance and maintaining steady plasma drug concentrations.

Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances, tremor, weight gain, and somnolence. Serious adverse effects such as hepatotoxicity, pancreatitis, and thrombocytopenia require regular monitoring of liver function tests, complete blood counts, and serum valproate levels.
