Phenylephrine acts as a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist, producing vasoconstriction in the nasal mucosa which leads to decreased swelling and congestion, facilitating easier breathing. Maxtra Syrup is indicated for the management of allergic rhinitis, common cold symptoms, sinusitis, and other upper respiratory tract allergies where nasal congestion is prominent.
The syrup formulation allows for ease of administration, particularly in pediatric and geriatric populations. Dosage should be strictly adhered to as per medical advice to avoid potential side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, increased blood pressure, or palpitations. Caution is advised in patients with hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, glaucoma, or hyperthyroidism.
