Loozout Oral Solution contains Lactulose 10gm/15ml, a synthetic disaccharide used primarily as a laxative and in the management of hepatic encephalopathy. Lactulose is not absorbed in the small intestine and reaches the colon where it is metabolized by colonic bacteria into low molecular weight organic acids, leading to an osmotic effect that increases stool water content, softening stools and promoting bowel movements. This mechanism makes Loozout effective in treating chronic constipation and facilitating regular bowel function. Additionally, in hepatic encephalopathy, lactulose reduces blood ammonia levels by acidifying the colonic contents, which converts ammonia (NH3) to ammonium (NH4+), thereby reducing its absorption and systemic toxicity. Loozout Oral Solution is indicated for patients requiring relief from constipation and for the prevention and treatment of portal-systemic encephalopathy associated with liver disease. The solution is administered orally, with dosage individualized based on patient response and clinical condition. Common adverse effects may include flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea, typically resolving with dose adjustment. Loozout is contraindicated in cases of galactosemia and intestinal obstruction. Careful monitoring is advised in diabetic patients due to its sugar content.
