Lomotil is indicated for symptomatic relief of diarrhea associated with various etiologies, including infectious and non-infectious causes. The medication should be used with caution in patients with underlying conditions such as obstructive jaundice, hepatic impairment, or a history of drug dependence. It is contraindicated in cases of diarrhea caused by enterotoxin-producing bacteria or pseudomembranous colitis.
Common adverse effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, and mild abdominal discomfort. Lomotil should be administered according to prescribed dosages, and patients should be advised to maintain adequate hydration. Use during pregnancy and lactation requires careful consideration of risk versus benefit. This medication is intended for short-term use and should be discontinued if diarrhea persists beyond 48 hours or worsens.
