Additionally, Levosulpiride exhibits central nervous system effects beneficial in managing psychiatric conditions including schizophrenia and depression, owing to its modulation of dopaminergic pathways. The drug acts by blocking dopamine receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system, thereby improving motility and exerting mood-stabilizing effects. Levogastrol is generally well tolerated; however, adverse effects may include extrapyramidal symptoms, hyperprolactinemia, sedation, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to sulpiride, prolactin-dependent tumors, and severe renal or hepatic impairment. Caution is advised when co-administered with other dopamine antagonists or CNS depressants. Dosage should be individualized based on the clinical condition and patient response.
