Laxiwal Solution contains Lactulose 10gm/15ml, a synthetic disaccharide used primarily as an osmotic laxative for the treatment of chronic constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. Lactulose is not absorbed in the small intestine and reaches the colon intact, where it undergoes fermentation by colonic bacteria, producing short-chain fatty acids that lower colonic pH and increase osmotic pressure. This results in increased water retention in the bowel, softening stools and promoting bowel movements. Laxiwal is indicated for patients experiencing difficulty in defecation due to constipation, including those with opioid-induced constipation or elderly patients with reduced bowel motility. Additionally, it is effective in managing hepatic encephalopathy by reducing blood ammonia levels through its acidifying effect in the colon, which converts ammonia to ammonium ions, thereby reducing systemic absorption. The usual dosage varies depending on the indication and patient response, and it should be adjusted accordingly under medical supervision. Common side effects include flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea, which are generally mild and transient. Laxiwal Solution should be used cautiously in patients with galactosemia or those requiring electrolyte monitoring. It is contraindicated in cases of intestinal obstruction or hypersensitivity to lactulose.
