Lactulose (3.335gm/5ml)
Active composition
Lactulose is metabolized by colonic bacteria, producing organic acids that draw water into the colon and enhance stool passage.
Medical applications
Laxit L Oral Solution contains Lactulose 3.335 gm per 5 ml and is indicated for the treatment of constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine but metabolized by colonic bacteria into low molecular weight organic acids, resulting in an osmotic effect that increases stool water content, softening stools and promoting bowel movements. It is effective in relieving chronic constipation and is particularly useful in patients where stool softening is desired without stimulating bowel motility. Additionally, Lactulose reduces blood ammonia levels by acidifying the colonic contents, converting ammonia (NH3) to ammonium (NH4+), which is less readily absorbed, thereby helping to manage hepatic encephalopathy associated with liver disease. The oral solution formulation allows for easy dose adjustment and administration in both adults and pediatric patients. The usual dosage varies depending on the indication and patient response, with titration to achieve desired bowel movement frequency or reduction in encephalopathy symptoms. Common side effects include flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea, which are generally mild and transient. Laxit L Oral Solution should be used under medical supervision, especially in patients with diabetes or electrolyte imbalances.
