It is administered orally, with dosage individualized based on the severity of constipation and patient response, typically starting with 15-30ml daily.
The onset of action usually occurs within 24 to 48 hours. Lactulose is generally well tolerated; however, potential side effects may include bloating, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort. It should be used with caution in patients with galactosemia and avoided in cases of intestinal obstruction.
