Lacosamide acts by selectively enhancing slow inactivation of voltage-gated sodium channels, stabilizing hyperexcitable neuronal membranes and inhibiting repetitive neuronal firing. This mechanism contributes to its efficacy in reducing seizure frequency. Lacoptal is typically administered orally and can be used as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy in adults and pediatric patients aged 4 years and older. The recommended starting dose is usually 50 mg twice daily, with gradual titration based on clinical response and tolerability, up to a maximum dose of 400 mg per day. Common adverse effects include dizziness, headache, nausea, and diplopia, which are generally mild to moderate and transient.
