Rosuvastatin acts by selectively inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis, thereby decreasing cholesterol production in the liver and enhancing clearance of LDL particles from the bloodstream. This mechanism contributes to the prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease.
Impurose 5 is indicated as an adjunct to diet and lifestyle modifications, such as exercise and weight control, to achieve optimal lipid levels. It may also be used in patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Dosage should be individualized based on patient response and risk factors, with regular monitoring of lipid profiles and liver function tests recommended.
Common adverse effects include headache, myalgia, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Caution is advised in patients with hepatic impairment and those on concomitant medications that may increase the risk of myopathy.
