Hydroxyzine acts by blocking H1 histamine receptors, thereby reducing the effects of histamine in the body, which helps alleviate allergic symptoms such as pruritus and urticaria.

Additionally, it exerts a central nervous system depressant effect, making it effective in the treatment of insomnia and preoperative sedation. Hipru 25 is also utilized in controlling nausea and vomiting due to its antiemetic action. The usual adult dosage varies depending on the indication but typically ranges from 25 mg to 100 mg daily, divided into multiple doses. Caution is advised in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to hydroxyzine or other antihistamines, and it should be used with care in individuals with impaired liver or kidney function.
Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, and headache. Hipru 25 should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation unless clearly necessary and under medical supervision. It is contraindicated in patients with prolonged QT interval or cardiac arrhythmias.
