Gutsalt Oral Suspension contains Lactulose 3.350 mg per 5 ml and is indicated primarily for the treatment of chronic constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine but metabolized by colonic bacteria into low molecular weight organic acids, resulting in an osmotic effect that increases stool water content and promotes bowel movements. This mechanism facilitates the relief of constipation by softening stools and enhancing intestinal transit. In hepatic encephalopathy, lactulose reduces blood ammonia levels by acidifying the colon, thereby converting ammonia to ammonium ions that are less readily absorbed, which helps to prevent or reduce the severity of encephalopathic episodes. Gutsalt Oral Suspension is administered orally, with dosage individualized according to patient response and clinical condition. It is generally well tolerated; however, some patients may experience gastrointestinal side effects such as bloating, flatulence, or diarrhea, which often diminish with continued use. Caution is advised in patients with galactosemia or those requiring electrolyte monitoring due to potential alterations in fluid and electrolyte balance.
