Esomeprazole (40mg)
Active composition
Esomeprazole irreversibly inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in the gastric parietal cells, reducing gastric acid secretion.
Medical applications
Esokem 40 Tablet contains Esomeprazole 40 mg, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce gastric acid secretion. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori infection in combination with appropriate antibiotics. Esomeprazole works by selectively inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells, thereby suppressing the final step of acid production. This reduction in gastric acidity promotes healing of acid-related damage to the esophagus and stomach lining and alleviates symptoms such as heartburn and acid regurgitation. Esokem 40 is administered orally, typically once daily before meals, with dosage adjustments based on clinical response and severity of the condition. It is generally well tolerated; however, potential side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and dizziness. Long-term use may be associated with risks such as vitamin B12 deficiency, hypomagnesemia, and increased susceptibility to gastrointestinal infections. Esokem 40 should be used under medical supervision, with caution advised in patients with liver impairment or those on concomitant medications metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system.
