Esmide 250mg Tablet contains Acetazolamide 250mg, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used primarily to treat conditions such as glaucoma, epilepsy, altitude sickness, and certain types of edema. By inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, Esmide reduces the formation of aqueous humor in the eye, thereby lowering intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. Additionally, it promotes diuresis by increasing renal excretion of bicarbonate, sodium, and water, which is beneficial in managing edema associated with congestive heart failure or drug-induced edema.

Esmide is also employed as an adjunctive therapy in certain types of epilepsy, particularly absence seizures, by stabilizing neuronal activity. Furthermore, it is used prophylactically to prevent acute mountain sickness by correcting acid-base imbalances. The medication is administered orally, with dosage tailored according to the specific condition and patient response. Common side effects may include paresthesia, altered taste, gastrointestinal disturbances, and electrolyte imbalance, necessitating periodic monitoring of serum electrolytes and renal function during prolonged therapy.
Esmide should be used cautiously in patients with sulfonamide allergy, renal or hepatic impairment, and in those with electrolyte disturbances. It is contraindicated in cases of marked renal or hepatic dysfunction and should be prescribed under medical supervision.
