Eptoin 50 Tablet contains Phenytoin 50 mg, an antiepileptic medication primarily used in the management and prevention of generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures and complex partial seizures. Phenytoin acts by stabilizing neuronal membranes and decreasing seizure activity by increasing efflux or decreasing influx of sodium ions across cell membranes in the motor cortex during the generation of nerve impulses.

This mechanism helps to prevent the spread of seizure activity in the brain. Eptoin 50 is indicated for the control of various types of seizures, including those occurring in epilepsy and status epilepticus. The dosage should be individualized based on the patient’s clinical response and serum phenytoin levels, with careful monitoring to avoid toxicity. Common adverse effects may include dizziness, ataxia, nystagmus, and gastrointestinal disturbances, while serious reactions such as hypersensitivity, blood dyscrasias, and hepatotoxicity require immediate medical attention.
Caution is advised in patients with impaired liver function, cardiovascular disease, or those taking concomitant medications that may interact with phenytoin. Regular monitoring of serum drug levels, liver function tests, and complete blood counts is recommended during prolonged therapy.
