Ostospray contains Calcitonin (Salmon) 200 IU per dose, a synthetic analog of the naturally occurring hormone calcitonin, used primarily in the management of osteoporosis and Paget’s disease of bone. Calcitonin acts by inhibiting osteoclastic bone resorption, thereby reducing bone turnover and helping to maintain bone density. Ostospray is indicated for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women who are at least five years postmenopause and when alternative treatments are not suitable. It is also used to relieve bone pain associated with Paget’s disease. The nasal spray formulation allows for convenient administration and rapid absorption through the nasal mucosa, providing effective systemic delivery. Patients should be advised to alternate nostrils daily to minimize local irritation and to avoid nasal congestion or trauma prior to administration to ensure optimal absorption. Common adverse effects include nasal irritation, dryness, and occasional epistaxis. Hypersensitivity reactions are rare but may occur. Ostospray is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to salmon calcitonin or any component of the formulation. Caution is advised in patients with hypocalcemia, as calcitonin may further lower serum calcium levels. Regular monitoring of calcium levels and bone density is recommended during therapy.
