Livoluk Oral Solution contains Lactulose 10gm per 15ml, a synthetic disaccharide used primarily as a laxative and in the management of hepatic encephalopathy. Lactulose acts by metabolizing in the colon into low molecular weight organic acids, which acidify the colonic contents, thereby promoting osmotic retention of water and softening stools. This mechanism facilitates easier bowel movements, making Livoluk effective in treating chronic constipation. Additionally, in patients with hepatic encephalopathy, Lactulose reduces blood ammonia levels by converting ammonia to ammonium ions in the colon, which are less readily absorbed, thus helping to prevent or reduce the severity of encephalopathy symptoms. Livoluk Oral Solution is administered orally, with dosage tailored according to the condition being treated and patient response. It is generally well tolerated, though some patients may experience mild gastrointestinal side effects such as bloating, flatulence, or diarrhea. Caution is advised in patients with galactosemia or those requiring electrolyte monitoring.
