Linezolid, an oxazolidinone class antibiotic, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 23S ribosomal RNA of the 50S subunit, thus preventing the formation of the initiation complex, and is particularly active against resistant Gram-positive pathogens including MRSA and VRE.
