Laxose Syrup, containing Lactulose 10gm per 15ml, is a synthetic disaccharide used primarily as an osmotic laxative to treat chronic constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. Lactulose is not absorbed in the small intestine, allowing it to reach the colon where it is metabolized by colonic bacteria into low molecular weight organic acids, leading to an osmotic effect that increases stool water content, softening stools and promoting bowel movements. This mechanism facilitates relief from constipation without causing significant electrolyte imbalance or dependence. Additionally, Laxose Syrup is effective in reducing blood ammonia levels in patients with hepatic encephalopathy by acidifying the colon, which converts ammonia (NH3) to ammonium (NH4+), thereby reducing its absorption and systemic toxicity. It is generally well tolerated; common side effects include flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea if overdosed. Dosage should be individualized based on clinical response, with careful monitoring in elderly patients and those with diabetes due to its sugar content. Laxose Syrup is contraindicated in patients with galactosemia, intestinal obstruction, or hypersensitivity to lactulose. It is recommended to use under medical supervision to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes and minimize adverse effects.
